TRIBAL DANCE ACADEMY

TRIBAL DANCE ACADEMY
Welcome to the first Tribal Dance Academy in Berlin, its main focus being on Modern and Fusion Dance. The enjoyment of dance is our main priority and we simply love to explore and develop it further.

We also believe that in order to develop something, one ought to know its origins and therefore that also influences classes. Every student has the chance to find her own personal individual style and take it to the next level.

A clean technique and basics are essential and a core theme in class. Motivation, willingness to learn and regular class/workshop participation are a guarantee for everyone to reach their individual learning level and all of that in a pleasant studio atmosphere. But the fun factor of learning will certainly not be missed!

All instructors at the Academy are continually training, studying and reviewing their styles so that students are guaranteed to receive instructions up to the latest standard, health wise and as far as content is concerned.

American Tribal Style Belly Dance
This is a modern group dance with American roots. It has captured and altered many oriental elements. In recent years American Tribal Style Belly Dance has established itself as an individual form of dance.

The dance has its roots in the late 60’s and early 70’s in San Francisco, California. However, the actual beginnings were in the late 80’s. Carolena Nericcio embedded the most significant element: cues. American Tribal Style Belly Dance (or ATS) is an established term, describing a distinct dance form with manifested rules. It is therefore imperative to distinguish between all the various sub-styles of what is commonly known as Tribal Style Dance and American Tribal Style Belly Dance.

The names Tribal Style Dance, Tribal Style or simply Tribal are mistakenly used in Germany for many derivations of American Tribal Style Belly Dance. These are usually modified versions, which differ from one group to the next.

Tribal Fusion
Tribal Style Dance combines different movements from different dance styles, i.e. Jazz, Modern, Flamenco, Polynesian and Bharata Natjam combined with the more familiar oriental folklore from Egypt and North Africa. The fascination becomes more apparent when danced as a group (“tribe”) as it is mainly improvised. A solo or duett in between enhances the performance. Strong presence, harmony, synchronized movements as well as authentic looking and spectacularly designed costumes are extremely appealing to the audience.

Tribal Fusion Style is the modern version of American Tribal Style. It addresses a younger generation, is musically boundless and the repertoire of movement can be enhanced by Yoga and Breakdance. Costuming is also totally unlimited.

In 2007 the first Tribal Fusion Project in Berlin was initiated by Maja. Now there are regular classes and workshops in the studio.

Indian Fusion
Indian Tribal Fusion Dance is a combination of classical Indian, folk and nomad styles with Tribal Fusion or ATS. The Asian understanding of dance and combination techniques constitutes a different approach to dance.

In class there are practical and theoretical components, in which cultural coherences of dance are mingled with Hinduism and everyday life. Josefines aim is to communicate an understanding of what it means to dance with a purpose (feel what you do and be aware of what an effect dance can have) and to dance with meaning (background information). In order to be more authentic, one has to be aware and knowledgeable about dance.
It is very important that all styles and backgrounds taught in class are treated with great respect. The interpretation of Indian Fusion enables cultures thousands of years old to be upheld and making it approachable by adding new facets.

Different styles of dance combined should complement each other and not loose their characteristic authenticity. Indian Fusion class is strongly influenced by classical South Indian Bharata Natjam. This style has clear lines, precise and elegant movements.

Josefine Wandel
Josefine discovered Raks Sharki at the age of 10 and began to take classes. During her “Abitur” (German final exams), she started to teach Oriental Style and Bollywood. This brought her slowly but surely to classical Indian dance.

Taken by Indian culture she travelled to India after finishing school where she worked as a volunteer in Rajasthan living with Nomads and travelling the country. This experience has deeply influenced her style of dance.

In 2006 she saw a live performance by Rachel Brice and has since been fascinated by Tribal Fusion. Currently she is being trained in Bharata Natjam, a classical Indian style.

In her style Josefine therefore combines both of her passions: classical Indian style and Tribal Fusion.

She is a permanent member of the Majallah Dance Company and teaches since 2010 Indian Fusion Dance at the Tribal Dance Academy.

Suzan Demircan
“Many years ago TIP (Berlin magazine) published a cover story on dance studios in Berlin and raffled 2 hours of dance lessons in one of the studios mentioned. Because I already had experience in Jazz, Modern, Flamenco, Ballet, Step Dance, Tango, African-Brazilian, Butoh, Bollywood, African and Streetdance, my choice fell on Oriental Style. Maybe it was because of my Turkish-Jugoslav roots or my gender or whatever, but from the first lesson I knew: This is what I want!

I learned my first steps from Firuze, took classes with Katharina Joumana and for a few years Beata & Horacio were also my teachers in Berlin. For 8 weeks I visited the Centre de Danse du Marais in Paris where I was taught by Leila Haddad. And then it was time for Buenos Aires. I was there 3 times for 3 months and took classes at  Amir Thalbes School of Arabian Dance and Saids Escuela de Danza Arabe. I also did 2 intensive workshops with Aziza and Virginia Mendez. Further workshop experience: Randa Kamel, Amra Gamal, Jillina, Rachel Brice, Mohamed Kazafy, Manis, Lubna Emam, Angelika Nemeth and Ahmed Ögren.

In Cairo I learned from the following masters: Mahmoud Reda, Farida Fahmy, Aida Nour, Tito, Youssry Sharif, Hassan Afifi…. and many more to come.
